Two-shot moulding can combine colours, textures, seals or rigid and soft functions in one component. It succeeds only when material compatibility, interface geometry, shot sequence, tooling and process control are designed as one system.

What 2K or twin-shot moulding is—and what it is not

Two materials touching does not guarantee adhesion. Supplier data, trials and the end-use environment should support the material pair.

Ask the supplier to show how these requirements appear in the drawing review, process plan and inspection record. If the design is still open, agree the trial or analysis that will settle it.

Where it creates real product or assembly value

Mechanical interlocks can provide retention where chemical bonding is insufficient. The interface needs enough area and a flow path that does not trap air.

Tool shut-offs must control flash without damaging the first material. Second-shot temperature and pressure can deform or remelt sensitive features.

This decision also affects tooling cost, trial time and long-term repeatability. Resolve it before tool release wherever possible; later correction is usually slower and more expensive.

Process controls and common interface defects

Gate vestige and witness lines should sit outside critical appearance or sealing zones. Colour change and contamination control matter for visible two-colour parts.
